Hi, I’m Damaris!

I am a former midwife from Germany with a passion for learning and collecting new experiences along this journey we call life! On my journey I have been blessed to be accepted into homes of strangers who became friends and experience their generosity and love, as well as the stories of their life challenges and success; none more so than from the friendships I have made in Australia.

While their cultures and norms may differ from mine and from each other, one experience remains a constant - and that is their journey into motherhood.

Every mother I have helped as a midwife or spoken to as a friend tells a story of how they received encouragement, care and support (adequate or not) from the health system and their community when they were pregnant but felt lost and overwhelmed after the baby is born.

I see an overwhelming need for mothers to continue to receive encouragement, care and moral and emotional support postpartum and that’s why I started Mum’s Oasis. As a doula, I am helping mums in Sydney, Australia and worldwide to bring out the best mum in them.

Watch this video to get to know me a little bit better. I talk about my background as a midwife and what led me to become a doula. I’ve been interviewed by Doula Keturah Stoltenberg from Motherhood with Keturah.

OASIS is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as a calm, pleasant place in the middle of somewhere busy and unpleasant.

There is a saying that “it takes a village to raise a child”, and I wholeheartedly believe that mums should never feel alone in their journey into motherhood. Whilst some of us may have good friends and family around us to cheer us on and celebrate the birth of our babies, the physical, mental and emotional support for mums is often time found lacking.

Unfortunately, as a result, they find themselves feeling inadequate, discouraged, alone, exhausted and overwhelmed, but worst of all guilty when they could not be the woman and mum they wanted to be.

Seeing the impact of childbirth and early motherhood on the women I helped as a midwife created an awareness of how difficult it can sometimes be for mothers to find time and space to recover, be refreshed and find themselves again.

With Mum’s Oasis, I want to create this space for them.

A space where mums-to-be can find courage for the beautiful birthing process and new mums can be supported and cared for so that they will be empowered to be the best women and mums they can be.

Giving Back

At Mum’s Oasis, I want to take responsibility for our environment and social world. I believe that we all have a part to play in making the world a better place with the few or many small or big steps that we can take.

I want to set an example for our children and want to make sure that they have a clean and peaceful world to live in.

I do this by carefully selecting the products and brands I use for my work and gift to my clients. I choose products that are made from natural and sustainable resources and brands that promote a social or environmental cause.

I also donate a percentage of Mum’s Oasis’ profit to Compassion, an organisation that releases children from poverty.

With Mum’s Oasis it is my heart to support new mums. That’s why I am all the more pleased that I found a project that aligns so much with what Mum’s Oasis is all about.

By investing into Compassion’s “Start of Life Bundle” we can “be there for an expectant mum living in poverty by providing her with the crucial support she needs for a safe delivery, protecting her health and giving her baby the best possible start to life.” Combined with the “Baby Essential Kit”, a care package filled with the vital supplies a mother living in poverty needs but is unable to afford, we can come alongside a brand-new mum and give her dignity and practical support.
